BOOK DESCRIPTION
In the dome cities of the decaying space station Atlas, mankind has finally clawed its way out of a second dark ages. Julian Reeves was born a scavenger in the wild, empty hallways of the second ring and immigrated to the budding city-state of New Lexington after the death of his father. Now he's the lead reporter for the station's first-ever newspaper, made possible by the salvage of an old, movable-type printing press.

When Julian is framed for the murder of his dome's military leader and forced to flee with the very man responsible, he will have to put aside his new-found humanity and take up the old ways to survive.

When a small group sets out to look for Julian, they find themselves hunted by the savage inhabitants of the first ring. One boy's awakening mental connection to the old technology could prove to be their salvation. Or their demise...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Debut Novel February 15, 2015

I was very impressed by the level of detail and depth of character in this book. There is a bit of roughness to the writing, which gives the story a genuine feel and causes one to become emotionally invested as they “listen” to the author’s voice. The storyline flows fairly seamlessly, following the passage of Julian Reeves from civilization, through the Wilds, and on toward his destination. Porta fleshes out the surrounding characters so that it is not just Julian you are curious about, but how he interacts with others. He brings forward several new ideas and ways of viewing everyday things. These ideas often caused me to put the book down, stare off into space, and ponder for awhile before being able to move on. Although not quite a Riordan, O.S. Card, or D. Adams, Porta is making his mark on the science fiction genre, and I can’t wait to see how he continues the story.

Atlas is a fascinating world filled with pockets of humanity that have evolved or regressed over hundreds of years. We become closely connected with likable yet complicated characters as they set out on a dangerous journey together. Consistent style and rich descriptions deliver action packed experiences as well as the interesting relationships between the characters and others as they traverse Atlas. A fascinating look at a possible future of mankind and a study of human interaction. I can’t wait for book two!
