Matthew Brand's intellect pushed the world into new eras of knowledge. He spent the first thirty years of his life stretching humanity's capacity for understanding and learning. By all accounts, his future looked even brighter than his past.

And then, police officers mistook his son for a criminal, gunning him down in the middle of the street. When the court let all four officers off without punishment, Brand changed his life's work.

He forgot about bettering the Earth, instead deciding to use his talents to bring his son back from the dead. Eventually, his mind conquered even death's mysteries--now, Brand needs living bodies to resurrect his son. So why not the bodies of the cops that murdered him?
In the most chilling FBI manhunt ever, they must catch a killer who can calculate all the odds and stack them in his favor.

REVIEWS
5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Novel April 13, 2014

In my literature class we were told to choose a current novel with sic-fi and/or horror characteristics. I chose Beers' book, and was pleasantly surprised by how captivating it turned out to be. This is a fantastic novel, and I highly recommend it!

As cliche as it sounds, you won't be able to put this novel down. Its use of multiple perspectives allows you to understand the intricacies behind the impossible decisions each character faces. Matthew Brand is a murderer, but he is also a grieving father. Brand has a choice, put his son to rest and move on or do everything in his power to bring him back to life.
Beers created a novel that, while rooted in science fiction and horror, ultimately helps the reader understand the importance of family. While his views come off as somewhat harsh in the evaluation of F.B.I. agent Allison Moore, his message is clear: spend as much time as you can with the ones you love, because you never know how much time you will have left.

5.0 out of 5 stars Giving the Devil His Due April 2, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
How do you go about stopping a man who is very likely the smartest person on Earth from wreaking havoc? Welcome to the future where if you are valuable enough (say a genetic anomaly or the smartest person...) and get convicted of a terrible crime you are put into a kind of frozen suspension. Just in case you are needed. Later.

Matthew Brand, a man so far beyond conventional intelligence he has figured out how to bring someone back from the dead, is one of the human popsicles kept on ice in a unit called "The Wall". The person Matthew wants to bring back? His son, who was killed by police officers for... nothing. He had committed no crime and was in fact on his way home. The loss of his son and subsequent acquittal of the offers involved in his death put Matthew on the road to "The Devil's Dream" and woe unto anyone who stands in his way. The Wall doesn't have a chance.

The struggle to capture Brand falls to the F.B.I. and you could be forgiven if you wanted to give a bit of a yawn here and think you know pretty much how this story is going to go. Yes, and no. There is, obviously, a process by which law enforcement goes after fugitives and that holds true for the story. Matthew Brand, however, is nowhere near a normal fugitive and the chase is going to be extremely difficult. And messy. Deeply messy.

I found myself a bit ambivalent about Matthew. The loss of his son to the very people who are supposed to be society's protectors who then escape justice was too much to handle. I could sympathize. The reason he was able to escape prison, murder, kidnap, and commit other crimes was due to his incredible intelligence. It was never going to be a level playing field. In the end- well, best to see for yourself.
