BOOK OF THE DAY: My Big Greek Family by Maria Constantine

by Maria Constantine

BOOK DESCRIPTION
A heart-warming, humorous, family saga set in London where Greek traditions are challenged as three sisters embark on a journey of self-discovery in the quest for happiness and love.

As the family descend to celebrate Georgina's thirtieth birthday she finds it a struggle to wear the cloak of I'm-doing-just-fine. The time has come for Georgina to make some serious changes, if she is to lead the life she wants to lead as opposed to the life she is expected to lead. An encounter with Jake O'Sullivan finds her ready to take a chance on romance, but will she stumble at the first obstacle?

Georgina is not the only sibling in the Andreou household having to take stock of her life; Katherina is forced to face a secret she has kept buried for many years as feelings emerge for a new colleague, despite her resolve to make a go of a relationship with a suitor introduced by the family. Meanwhile, Sophia, the youngest of the sisters, and the most rebellious, discovers a new spiritual direction in her life.

A last-minute holiday to Greece challenges the sisters' bond as secrets unravel and hidden emotions finally surface on the veranda of their holiday retreat ...

"I really enjoyed this family saga. With her knowledge and experience of 'The Greek Way', Maria Constantine has written a touching, often humorous story with empathy and understanding. It ticked all my boxes." ChickLit Club.

"One huge lively Greek family. Three charming sisters. A journey to self-discovery. A journey of pure bliss." ChickLit Pad.

Chick-lit isn't my genre but this book sounded interesting because I myself am Anglo Greek and understand well the ways of the big Greek family.! It also brought back memories of the 1950's when I became firm friends with many lovely, warm hearted and generous Cypriot families down our road who had recently moved there. Ms Constantine's debut novel is written beautifully, the dialogue bringing to life the love between the sisters and the teasings and humour of family life between siblings. She gives the parents respect and understanding for their wish to cling to their old culture and way of life which is all they knew and are now too old to change. But at the same time, she explores with empathy and compassion the need for modern young women to break away from old traditions without destroying them. A need to find their own voice and way of life in British culture. I really enjoyed this book, loved the characters in it and look forward to the sequel.

I really enjoyed reading My Big Greek Family!
It's light, but has a lot of taste. I enjoyed how the author keeps things interesting by retrospective writing.

Made me more aware of things that we all bring in relationships and the importance of a family, with all the quarks they have.
